Life Imitates Art in Ready Player One
I recently reread Ready Player One and started reading Ready Player Two for the first time (find the duology here). With the recent release of Apple’s Vision Pro, We are seeing life imitate art. The reviews I’ve seen over the last two weeks have said that the Vision Pro is cool. However, there isn’t enough value in the product at this time to justify the price-tag. This is especially true if you need glasses because you need a separate attachment to use them while wearing it. Said attachment is not included with the Vision Pro.
Companies are already working on developing large scale metaverses similar to the oasis in Ready Player One. Furthermore, With technology like the Neuralink being developed (and undergoing human trials) we are ahead of the game in developing such technological advancements by 2045. I believe Neuralink could have similar capabilities as the new VR experience explored in Ready Player Two eventually. If not, It would certainly pave the way for that kind of technology to exist.
This technology would be groundbreaking for entertainment, the workforce, and the world at large. Ready Player One exists and even set the stage for what we decide to do with VR technology. Something called the Readyverse is under development and is heavily inspired by the Oasis (learn more here). This shows me that Art can heavily impact the trajectory of our reality. NOTHING has inspired me more than these new technological advancements.
Art Imitates Life in Future Fiction
Now that we are seeing the development of fiction into reality, we may have opened ourselves up to a new brand of genre bending. We could start working on metaverse romcoms, mysteries, thrillers, and more. What at one time (and currently is) Sci-fi will be reality which will completely change the landscape of our norm, and in turn our fiction. I believe now is a great time to strike while the iron is hot and get to thinking of how we want to shape the new landscape of fiction.
Jump on writing those Ready Player one Fan-Fics, Who knows? Your saucy Sci-fi rom-com might be tomorrow’s contemporary romance. After has like five movies and that started out as a Harry Styles fan fiction! Furthermore, Writers such as Alexa Donne are proponents for writing Fan Fiction and assert that it is a good way to hone your craft despite what the nay-sayers might think. She also has some tips for such writers on what they may want to improve on here.
At the end of the day, I just wanted to share this bit of inspiration in hopes that it may become contagious. Maybe it’ll help cure someone’s writer’s block (read more about my stance on white page syndrome here) or silence someone’s inner critic. I sincerely hope that person is you. If so, check out my blog post on the stages of Brainstorming here!
